Before the internet swallowed everything, there was another network. It ran on phone lines, modems, and the patience of men and women who left their computers running all night so that strangers could dial in, read the news, play games, and talk to each other.
These were the SysOps — system operators. They built the infrastructure of a pre-internet connected world, maintained it without pay, and created communities that, for many people, were the first online home they ever had.
The BBS era is over. But the SysOps are still out there. Some never stopped running their boards. Others have come back. A new generation has discovered what was built and decided to build more. The Secret Society of BBS SysOps exists to find them, certify them, and connect them.
SSBBSS is a certification body and membership society for BBS system operators. We maintain a rigorous certification programme across four ranks, from Initiate through to Master. Certification is earned — it cannot be bought.
All study materials are free and public. Anyone can learn. The exam is how you prove it. Pass and you join the registry. Your SSBBSS member ID is permanent and publicly verifiable.
We are not a nostalgia club. We are an active technical society. Members run real BBS systems, connect to message networks, and maintain the craft.
The Society is governed by the Council, a body of senior members holding the following positions: Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, Certification Director, Network Coordinator, Archivist, and Community Steward.
Council members are drawn from the Master rank and serve by appointment. The Council sets certification standards, reviews Master candidates, and maintains the direction of the Society.
